Beginning in April 2024 Brighter Futures recruited student volunteers from various EGUSD high schools looking to directly impact student’s academic journeys by providing free tutoring. With the help of Mathnasium’s tutoring facilities and training program, Brighter Futures is training these volunteers on how to be effective tutors, create a bond with the tutee, and personalize feedback to fit each individual’s needs. We are teaming up with Title 1 schools (schools in low-income areas) to provide their students with an accessible tutoring program with the hopes of bolstering academic results and confidence.

In April of 2024, we established an ongoing book drive called “Books for Brighter Futures.” In this program, we collect books from the community and redistribute them to homeless youth shelters, foster homes, 30+ partner organizations across California, and local organizations in low-income areas of the Philippines and India. We have hopes of expanding our program even further in the future. To date, we have collected and redistributed 16,000 books that would have otherwise remained collecting dust.

Access to books plays a huge role in developing a child’s love for reading and allowing them the opportunity to develop strong literacy skills from a young age. Strong reading skills allow individuals to easily navigate higher education, the workforce, and so much more. Literacy rates have been shown to have a direct correlation with graduation rates. Literacy itself also connects communities, as words have the power to shape people’s thoughts and consequently their actions. Words are vessels for ideas and the foundation for change in society. We at Brighter Futures believe that the importance of literacy cannot be overstated.

Through this book drive, we organized a grassroots initiative to redistribute books into historically and currently marginalized communities, such as women, youth of color, low-income families, etc. We hope to encourage a love for reading as well as boost literacy rates in disadvantaged communities.

Brighter Future’s first major event to raise money took place at the annual Lunar New Year Festival held in Elk Grove Park in February of 2024. Multiple raffles for prizes were held and several games were hosted at the Brighter Future’s booth. Through this event, we were able to connect with many different organizations, businesses, and schools. Through our raffles and donations from festival participants, our organization was able to raise our first 1000 dollars.
